IBM is set to take the lead in the database business with its bid to buy Informix for $1 Billion in cash.

IBM will become number one by combining its 400,000 database customers with Informix's 100,000 database customers to capture a total market share of 34 percent of the market. Oracle, now number one, will drop to number two with presently 31 percent of the database market.
